Notepad ++ crash !! Recover your lost file

What if your notepad++ crash while you are uploading  your file with ftp, and after restart notepad++ you see the file is empty!!!!!!!! I am sure it will make you crazy.This thing happens with me many time. Luckily we have solution if this thing happens to you gain. You can recover your file and its content.

Step 1. When Notepad++ crash

You are uploading file crashes.php, suddenly following screen appears on your window
source code editor has stopped working. i.e notepad ++ crash !!!
notepad++ crashes then recover file

Then do not close the notepad++.

Step 2. Locate the file in Notepad++ Cache

Here is simple shortcut to locate the local copy of the file.
Press WinKey+R . Now in run textbox enter the path below.

%AppData%/Notepad++/plugins/config/NppFTP/Cache

source code editor has stopped working

Notepad++ stores the cache data in roaming directory of system.

Step 3.Create backup of the cache file

Now in Cache directory all your edited ftp files present as in live server .
Locate and copy the file crashes.php for backup copy the file on desktop . Rename it to backup_crashes.php .
After creating backup ,you can restart your Notepad++ (GNU) .

Step 4. Recover the file.

Restart Notepad++
connect with your remote server
open the remote file crashes.php again .
if it is blank then copy the content from local backup file(backup_crashes.php) stored on desktop.

So  next time if notepad crashes while uploading then keep these steps in mind.

    This method didn’t work for me as I already closed the program after the fatal error. But this method allowed for me to figure out a way to fix my problem. Hopefully this helps others:

    Instead of going to

    %AppData%/Notepad++/plugins/config/NppFTP/Cache

    as suggested above, go a few sub-directories back and one over, to

    %AppData%/Notepad++/backup

    and hopefully a copy of your lost file should be there. Mine was.

    Cheers

      fucking notepad++ crash out of nowhere. You save me a lot!!!!!!!!!!

    • Andrew Schultz

      Wow, thanks! The main post was overall well done–it had me looking in the Notepad++ directory for *.txt (dir /s *.txt) but that turned up nothing but I figured I had to be close. So this got me to where I tried dir /od and…bam. There it was.

      The file was actually 20160216.txt@2016-02-22_141823 … and it’s nice to have the timestamp.

      So good work all. And I’m less scared about losing info, though I’ll try to be more careful in the future of course. Really kicking myself for making that silly modification to my daily writing files.

      Seriously, I suffered the indignity of signing up for Disqus just to post this. I’m that grateful

    Can any one help me to recover the lost data from notepad++.. As I tried the below method and I couldn’t find the lost file. The file was not saved and its really a imp one. I really dont know what to do.
    %AppData%/Notepad++/plugins/config/NppFTP/Cache –> This path doesnt have cache directory.

    %AppData%/Notepad++/backup –> This path doesn’t have backup file.
    Can any one please help me?

    *cries a little tear of relief*

    Another thing you can try if the backup folder doesn’t have your files. Look one level up from %AppData% in:

    C:/Users//AppData/Local/Temp

    and see if there is folder called “N++RECOV”

    That had my non-saved files.

I found the file at C:UsersriccoAppDataRoamingNotepad++backup. The file was renamed into new name, simply dateTime value was added to its original name. I am so happy. Thank you so much
